Diatomaceous earth is mined in various western areas of the US where millions of years ago, lakes once covered the areas. These lakes held incredible populations of single celled aquatic organisms called diatoms, which died and eventually created these deposits.

These fossilized bodies are very high in silica, and consequently retained their very sharp shapes- think of microscopic pcs of broken glass.
